In 18th Century London, a young gambler named Lazarus, who amassed his wealth in gambling dens, finds himself compelled to acquire a peculiar 'item' following a disastrous bet. This 'item' happens to be a slave-girl named Leela, bearing scars of a burnt throat, devoid of voice and emotion, trained solely for her master's pleasure without resistance. Reluctant to abandon her, Lazarus takes her in as a maid, gradually mentoring her.
