Nanoka Koyanagi, a peculiar elementary school student, is tasked by her teacher to explore the concept of 'happiness.' Along her journey of introspection, she encounters Abazure-san, a lively woman who aids her in rescuing a cat, and Obaa-chan, an elderly recluse in the forest. One fateful day, Nanoka crosses paths with Minami, a high schooler engaged in self-harm. As Nanoka forms bonds with these diverse individuals, their tales intertwine, guiding her towards a profound exploration of herself.
