Serge Battour, the son of a French viscount and a Romani prostitute, faces rejection from his family and peers due to his mixed heritage. Seeking acceptance, he enrolls at Lacombrade Academy, where he meets Gilbert Cocteau, another outcast with a troubled past. Despite their initial differences and Gilbert's reluctance to connect, they are thrown together as roommates. Serge, optimistic and determined to befriend Gilbert, faces a challenge in breaking through his roommate's barriers.
