In a bygone era, the artist-monk Myoue possessed the extraordinary ability to breathe life into his creations through art. Residing in peaceful seclusion with his wife Koto, a humanized black rabbit, and their trio of offspring—Yakushimaru, Kurama, and Yase—their tranquil existence is disrupted when authorities blame Myoue's animated artworks for disturbances. Fleeing to the bespoke realm of the Looking Glass City, harmony prevails until Myoue and Koto vanish unexpectedly, thrusting their children into the role of city custodians. As Yakushimaru assumes his father's mantle, a new arrival, a spirited girl named Koto wielding a colossal hammer and accompanied by mischievous companions, descends from the skies on a quest to locate the missing Myoue and Koto. Amidst the enigmatic paper city, this boisterous newcomer may hold the key to unraveling the mysteries and liberating its denizens.
