When Toushirou Hijikata, the Demonic Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, comes into possession of a cursed sword, his tough demeanor is replaced by an otaku obsession. As he grapples with the curse, a new and ambitious police force member, Itou Kamotarou, sees an opportunity to overthrow Hijikata and seize power. However, Itou's plans are more sinister than anyone anticipates, endangering the very existence of the Shinsengumi. Meanwhile, the Yorozuya group encounters a potential recruit, the enigmatic and violence-prone Pirako Doromizu, whose cheerful facade hides a dark side. Little do Gintoki and his comrades know, Pirako's ties to a powerful figure in the Kabuki district of Edo spark a civil war that consumes the district's residents in turmoil.
