In a world gripped by industrial progress, a formidable monster emerges, its heart encased in unyielding iron. Through its infectious bite, this beast spawns ferocious undead beings dubbed Kabane. On the distant isle of Hinomoto, havens called stations provide sanctuary from these abominations. Connecting these bastions are steam-powered locomotives known as Hayajiro, ferrying goods and passengers. Ikoma, a resident of Aragane station involved in crafting the Hayajiro, forges his weapon, Tsuranukizutsu, to combat the menace. One fateful day, amid his quest for vengeance, he encounters Mumei, a girl exempt from the Kabane screenings. When chaos strikes as Kabane overrun the Hayajiro, Ikoma seizes the chance to confront the threat looming over his station.
