In a quaint village near Antwerp, Belgium, Nello Daas showcases his artistic talents while helping his sickly grandfather sell milk in the city market. His friendship with Alois Cogez, the daughter of their stern landlord, faces opposition due to their differing social statuses. When Alois is sent away to school in Antwerp to keep them apart, Nello discovers an art competition revolving around his idol, Peter Paul Rubens. This competition not only promises a cash prize but also the chance to attend the same school as Alois. Determined, Nello sets out to create a masterpiece despite facing numerous challenges. Throughout his struggles, Nello finds unwavering support from his loyal companion, Patrasche, a dog he rescued from cruelty.
