While spending her summer break at her grandparents' place, Tamai Shiina, a lively schoolgirl, encounters a peculiar creature whom she names 'Hoshimaru - The Round Star'. Upon returning home for school, she discovers other children with similar creature companions. However, Shiina soon realizes that not all these creatures and their owners are as amicable as Hoshimaru.
